Sober Coach (DFW Sober Coaching) Is a supportive, personalized confidant that communicates with the newly recovering addict to determine the best course of action to achieve sobriety. Sober Coaches provide a unique level of accountability that is necessary for the newly recovering addict.
In this day and age the 28 day treatment program is a thing of the past. All though treatment centers play a vital role in achieving sobriety, the on-going treatment plan is vital to continuous sobriety. What does an addict do once they leave rehab? What does a newly recovering addict do? This is where the sober coach plays a vital role as well.
A sober coach is an individual that holds the new addict accountable for the many levels of recovery. This is accomplished by day to day communication with the addict as well as face to face visits with a pre- determined frequency. Communicating with the addict, treatment centers, family members, sponsors, 12 step community and or possible sober living managers, the sober coach determines the best possible treatment plan for the newly recovering addict in conjunction with the respective parties.
Daily accountability is essential for the on-going treatment plan. Alcoholics and addicts new in recovery often get off track of what they are supposed to be doing. The sober coach is there to help them stay focused on participating in their own recovery process. This is accomplished by non-enabling conversations between the addict and the sober coach, daily.
How It Works An assessment will be made between the sober coach, addict/individual, family, sponsor, counselor and the treatment center. An on-going treatment plan will determine to what degree the sober coach will be utilized. A personalized treatment plan will be proposed and agreed upon, which will document the specific plan of action to be utilized. All parties involved will agree on the actions required for transitioning into their new life. Specifics generally include daily communication frequency & timing, face to face meeting frequency, recovery meetings attendance, liaisons to be utilized, random drug and alcohol testing, and other monitoring beneficial to the individual’s success. The typical amount of communication will be 3 phone calls a day, 4 meetings a week, 2 face to face meetings weekly and random drug and alcohol testing. The sober coach will communicate with the primary persons involved at least weekly. The purpose of this communication is two-fold – to hold the addict accountable to the agreed on terms of their treatment plan and to set goals for areas of improvement for the coming week. Consequences of failure to follow the plan will also be specified in advance, and reviewed during weekly communications. A covenant related to such matters as attitude, individual’s commitment and investment in the plan, honesty, and absence of attempts to circumvent the objective of the plan is included. In addition, the plan is subject to be amended on an ongoing basis by agreement of the parties. The individualized plan and ongoing assessments serve to provide for a dynamic plan to address the changing needs of the individual as they progress toward successful sober living.
